So you’re ready, they’re ready, but where do you begin? With so many foods to choose from, we’ve taken a look at the best place to start.
When first starting weaning, babies can be offered starchy foods, protein, and pasteurised dairy. It’s common for parents to start with mashed or soft cooked fruit and vegetables as they’re nutritious and easy to prepare. As there’s also evidence to suggest that starting with vegetables on their own is beneficial for lifelong healthy eating, fruit and veg might be a good first port of call!
Once comfortable with fruit and vegetables, soft cooked proteins (meat and fish), starches (pasta, noodles and bread) and full-fat dairy foods can be introduced. Opt for unsweetened dairy products and feel free to use full-fat dairy in your cooking too, but stick to breast milk or infant formula as drinks with or between meals.
What about allergens?
Peanuts, hen’s eggs, gluten and fish are safe from 6 months, unless there’s a family history of allergens. In this case, speak to your health care practitioner!
And finally: don’t add salt or sugar to your baby’s food. Their taste buds will thank you for it in the long-run, as they’ll learn to love real, natural flavours, just like us!
